This week I made the decision to invest in a brand new PC monitor. My current monitor was serving it’s purpose reasonably well, but I decided to take a shot at a monitor with IPS technology – that monitor being the LG IPS234V.
Update: I’d just like to update this post quickly and say that 7 months down the line, my IPS234V is still performing marvellously. I’ve since sampled a few movies and the colour reproduction is outstanding. I still stand by my thoughts that this monitor is about as good as you’re likely to get for the price – so for those looking for a solid monitor on a budget, I can’t recommend it enough. If you have any further comments please do post them below and I’ll promise to reply ASAP. Thanks!
IPS technology, or “In-Plane Switching”, is a relatively new monitor technology that allows for greater viewing angles, and more importantly, better colour reproduction over standard LCD monitors. Basically, it’ll allow me to become a better designer *ahem*.
So on to my monitor of choice, the 23″ LG IPS234V. This monitor has a feature set to rival much higher priced panels, so I can only thank LG for allowing it to be sold within the price range of a mere mortal. With HDMI (& headphone), VGA & DVI Outputs, a great contrast ratio & response time and very stylish looks – the LG IPS234V suits my needs perfectly.
Included in the box is the monitor itself, a tilt stand to allow for plenty of movement, a VGA cable, an external power supply (that’s why the monitor is so thin), driver CD (wasn’t necessary on my W7 desktop) and instruction manuals. Everything you need for a swift and efficient setup.
So how does it perform? Very bloomin’ nicely! I’m using it with the supplied VGA cable. I was very impressed with the quality of the image that this monitor produced, and compared to my previous monitor, it’s incomparable! Even the monitor settings straight out of the box were very impressive and would suit even the most critical of owners.
The stand for the monitor is finished in the same piano black as the monitor bezel, and tilts forwards and backwards a more than adequate amount. It does wobble a little when you’re particularly heavy handed, but as long as you’re on a nice sturdy desk this won’t a problem. Besides, the monitor is compatible with a VESA mount – so if you’re that way inclined, it’s ideal.
I’ve only been using the monitor for one day, so I can’t yet comment on factors of longevity. Likewise, as it will be used in an office environment I will rarely (if ever) use it for gaming or watching movies, so I can’t comment on the performance of it with these sources – but I can certainly recommend it to anybody who is in the market for a cheap, stylish and all-round awesome new monitor.
Here are the basic specs, and if you want to give the monitor a try, I’ve added a link to purchase it on Amazon.
– Resolution: 1920 x 1080
– Brightness: 250 cd/m2
– Contrast Ratio: 1000:1 / 5000000:1 (dynamic)
– Response Time: 5 ms
– Interface: VGA, DVI-D, HDMI, 3.5mm Headphone Out

No 20-something’s desk is complete without a toilet roll ;)
Ah, of course!
How do you like your monitor? Are pics more detailed? Why dont you try it out with a proper DVI cable :) Also did you measure any input lag or anything? Really interested in this monitor since its so cheap and even has S IPS panel. Can you make some more pics?
Thanks!!!
Thanks for the comment!
The monitor is still holding up just fine, it really is a great screen for the price. I have since tried it with a DVI cable but there is no noticeable difference in quality.
And no, I haven’t measured input lag – like I say, I only use this monitor for work purposes therefore input lag plays no relevance to me. It is perfect for my needs though.
Do you want more pictures of anything in particular?
Hi. How do you find the antiglare coating on this monitor, especially with lighter colours such as whites, when using it when theres is little or no sunlight around (or in the evenings?) Does it look sparkly, or dirty, or like someone has sprinked sugar on the screen? I have got the previous model, but the antiglare on mine is so overpowering.
Thanks :O)
Hi there! I obviously can’t compare it to the previous iteration of this monitor, but the antiglare doesn’t seem too intrusive at all.
The whites are still white, and colours pop nicely. It’s definitely good enough for my intended use, but it guess it always comes down to personal preference.
Thanks for the comment!
Hi! Is black bleeding very visible? Can you take a photo with all black image? Thanks :)
Hi! There is certainly no noticeable bleeding on my particular monitor. I can’t take a photograph showing this due to the position of the monitor in my office (opposite a window), but there’s no light bleeding through anywhere.
Just picked up this monitor new and there is a large white backlight spot (looks like a circle), otherwise this monitor is brilliant. No dead pixels, stunning colours and on 100% brightness it’s blinding :)
Have ordered a new replacement and sending this faulty one back.
Thanks for the comment! Shame about the fault, but I’m sure the replacement will serve you well. Almost 3 months down the line with my one, and still perfect! :)
Thanks for replying, I received my replacement today and it’s perfect, no dead pixels, even white tint and no white spots :)
Hi. You still have the display? When it shows a complete black image it goes into sleep mode but then recovers itself. Is there an option to stop this?
Hey, I do indeed still have the monitor. I can’t say I’ve ever experienced it going into sleep mode though so I can’t really help you I’m afraid. Do you have an example of this?
I don’t recall seeing anything about this in the monitor’s menu settings, but perhaps you could try altering the settings of your graphics card to see if that makes a difference? Sorry!
The ‘problem’ disappeared when i activated ‘super energy saving’; i have no ideea how it works but i’m glad it doesn’t sleep anymore; not so much as a problem in browsing, movies, but in games it’s disturbing.
Hi, I’m having the same problem with one of my ips234v’s – how do you enable/disable the super energy saving mode?
Sorry for responding so late; press the func button, right and there you go.
